The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights called for the adherence to the law and human rights regulations while enforcing curfews in the affected areas.

KNCHR said it will continue to protect and promote human rights and fundamental freedom for counties where curfew is imposed.

The three counties are Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot.

The commission called upon the inspector general of the National Police Service, cabinet secretary in charge of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government to issue directives to all personnel deployed to the affected counties to strictly undertake their operation within the confines of the law.

"There shall be zero tolerance to human rights violations and abuses," KNCHR said.

"There must be an assurance that there will be individual as well as command responsibility to any human rights violations that will be perpetuated."

Further, the commission called upon the government security agencies to work collaboratively with oversight agencies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, and Human Rights Organisations in order to closely monitor the exercise for purposes of documenting and responding to reported cases of human rights, violations or abuses if they occur.

On the right to education, the commission calls on the National and county governments to take appropriate measures to ensure the reopening of the closed schools and seamless resumption of learning in the affected areas with immediate effect.

"This being an election year the commission calls upon all actors to put in place measures to ensure that all residents of the affected area are able to exercise their political rights including electoral civic education or an equal basis as the rest of Kenyans without fear or intimidation."

KNCHR assured members of the public that the commission will continue to monitor, investigate and intervene on various human rights issues and document any violations and abuses in the affected area of Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot counties.
