Azimio deputy presidential candidate Martha Karua has called on residents of Rift Valley and Kenyans to keep peace and unity before, during and after the August 9, elections.

Karua said the political competition was not enmity and Kenyans should prepare to participate in the polls while ensuring the country remains peaceful.

"We all children of one house called Kenya and competition like in politics should not cause disunity," Karua said.

She was speaking at the Ayub Kinyua PCEA church in Eldoret where she attended a church service ahead of campaign rallies in the region.

Karua is with nominated MP Maina Kamanda, CAS Beatrice Elachi, Governor for Elgeyo Marakwet Alex Tolgos, and Dr Mukhisa Kituyi among other leaders.

Karua received a rousing welcome at the church where she also urged religious leaders to pray for the country ahead of the polls.

"The church should also help Kenyans to understand the difference between bad and good even as we prepare to elect leaders for our nation", Karua said.

It's the first time Karua is visiting the region after she was appointed as running mate to presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

The region is Deputy President William Ruto's home county and a perceived stronghold but Azimo enjoys support mostly within Eldoret.

Karua will later have a roadside meeting at the main market in Eldoret before the main rally at Huruma grounds.
