Mount Kenya University is set to host the second edition of the international conference on peace, security for social enterprise (ICPSSE).

ICPSSE will serve as a platform for academia and different sector players to discuss peace and security matters for social-economic development.

The conference will be held between May 18 and May 20 at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre, at the institution’s main campus.

According to the university’s vice chancellor, elections come and go, and this should not cause conflict because after elections we have to live together.

“Voting is a one day event and people should be able to go to work after that, children should be able to school peacefully without having any fears,” Vincent Gaitho said.

The conference that will be attended by at least 500 delegates occurs after every five years with first edition having been held in 2017, as the country was headed to the General election.

The second edition of ICPSSE seeks to recognises the importance of a peaceful electioneering period in catalyzing social enterprise as well as entrenching good democratic and governance practices.

“Clashes between members of different communities or ethnicities over limited resources such as water and pasture remain a disruptive challenge,” a communication from the organizers said.

“Cultural practices including cattle rustling often result in internal displacement of the attacked communities and disrupt their social-economic activities. These practices undermine normal livelihood activities and fuel poverty within communities.”

The event will be opened by agriculture CS Peter Munya.

The conference aims at coming up with policy contributions with a focus on peace, security for sustainable development.

It also seeks to with a partnership with scholars, policy makers and key stakeholders in peace and security matters.
