Kibaki’s body arrives in Othaya ahead of burial service

The funeral cortege of former  President Mwai Kibaki has arrived in Othaya, Nyeri County.

400 meters to the burial service venue, Kibaki's body, which had been transported in a hearse, was moved into the gun carriage and a military parade was mounted in his honour.

The national anthem was sung and the military made a snail pace march to Othaya approved school ground, where the burial service was held.

President Uhuru Kenyatta received Kibaki's body at the burial service venue.

Kibaki's body left the Lee funeral home at 7 am in Nairobi and arrived past 10 am expected time.

Officers in the rank of a colonel were deployed as the pallbearers and were led by a brigadier general.

The cortege consisted of family members, journalists and military officers.

Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga and senior dignitaries have graced the function.

Several government officials including Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, Education CS  George Magoha and Eugine Wamalwa (Defence CS) are also present at the service.

Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi among other leaders are also present.

Close to 15,000 people are expected to attend the burial service.

Thousands of people across the country turned up as early as 5 am to access the venue.

The government has kept its earlier promise to provide water, sodas and bread for the people as food and liquids were not allowed.
