Former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth has emerged as the most preferred running mate for Azimio-One Kenya Alliance presidential aspirant Raila Odinga.

In a poll conducted by Radio Africa Group, Kenneth was the favourite person to deputise the ODM leader with 31.0 per cent support.

Former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka came in second with 26.0 per cent, while Martha Karua closed the top three in the list of the most preferred running mates at 24.0 per cent.

Gideon Moi and Governor Kivutha Kibwana came in third and fourth place with 5.7 and 4.4 per cent, respectively.

The poll was conducted between April 1 and 13, 2022, with 4,497 respondents from all 47 counties weighted to reflect the IEBC register for November 2021.

The method used was new SMS technology.

The margin of error is 4.5 per cent and the survey was funded by the Radio Africa Group.

Respondents from other regions expressed confidence in Kenneth having scored 29.1 per cent in Central, Nairobi (32.2%), North Eastern (35%), North rift (34.1%), Nyanza (42.3%), South rift (31.2%) and Western (34.3%) regions.

Kalonzo had the most support in Lower Eastern (66.4%), Coast (33.1%), Nairobi(26.5%) and Upper Eastern at 26%.

Karua had 33 per cent in Central, Western (30.4%) and Nairobi (28%).

This comes despite spirited calls by Kalonzo Musyoka and leaders allied to his Wiper party to have him named as Raila's running mate.

They insist that they have the requisite numbers to deliver votes from the Ukambani region.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr was among the first to start the demand for the seat, asserting that the deputy president in the Azimio camp must come from Wiper.

The Mt Kenya region has also been fronting one of their own to deputise Raila in the August 9 polls.

Some of those greatly mentioned to be gunning for the former prime minister's number two are Peter Kenneth and Martha Karua.

This has seen Raila receive support from the vote-rich region including the business community known as Mt Kenya Foundation.

Deputy President William Ruto is also expected to pick a running mate from the region.
