Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has now expressed his bid to be the running mate of ODM leader Raila Odinga in the August 9, polls.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap leader made his interest public after a meeting with his party's National Governing Council on Sunday.

"With the urging of my party members, I present myself for consideration for the position of deputy president to Jakom Raila Odinga," Mutua said.

The meeting was held at the Convent International Hotel, Lavington, Nairobi after the Governor issued a summon on Saturday.

He went on to express his confidence that the ODM leader will win the presidency saying he fits the bill to lead the country.

"We have unanimously agreed to support the presidency of  Raila Odinga and the Azimio umbrella. Truth be told, it is his time. Just like it was Nelson Mandela's time on May 10th, 1994,  this August 9, 2022 elections is Raila's time," he said.

On why he chose Raila, he said:

"I have a soft spot for Raila. He is a good man full of charisma. Humble man despite his power and influence. He is not just a leader but I consider him as a friend and he looks at me as a friend. He is focused and knows where Kenya is supposed to be."

On reports of him ditching the Azimio la Umoja, Mutua noted that their concerns were sorted and that they are now focused on winning together in the August 9, polls.

Among the issues raised by Mutua, his party and seven other outfits included failure to access and read the document presented at the Registrar of Parties ny the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition.

"I wish to confirm that I have at last seen the document that was placed at the Registrar of parties. I have read it and presented it to my team and we are satisfied," Mutua said on Sunday.

He went on to pledge a thorough campaign saying his outfit will work together with other Azimio parties to ensure that they bring the presidency home.

Mutua told Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to put his personal differences aside for the good of the coalition.

He said there is a need for them to work together and put focus on Raila's presidential bid.

The Machakos county boss added that he is ready to bury his differences with Kalonzo for the sake of Raila's presidency.

"Let us work together, strategise together and even campaign together because that is the only way we can win. I am ready for a Handshake so that we can forge forward and secure Raila's presidency."
