A 26-year-old fisherman drowned on Sunday evening in Lake Victoria after his boat capsized due to strong winds.
Samuel Otieno, who was fishing near Awana beach, Karachuonyo constituency, was unable to control his boat.
Fishermen who saw him from a distance said he was struggling to control the movement of the boat.
North Karachuonyo ward Beach Management Unit chairman Erick Osawa said the incident occurred a few minutes after Otieno left Kamolo beach.
Osawa said Otieno was alone in the boat, making rescue difficult.
“We could not help because he had drowned when we arrived at the place,” he said.
Otieno's family, friends and colleagues have started looking for his body.
Kowuor chief John Aron urged fishermen to put on life jackets before fishing.
This, he said, makes it easier to rescue them in case of an accident.
