Former National Police Service spokesman Charles Owino has bolted out of ODM nominations and will not vie for Siaya governor seat.

Owino on Tuesday quit the race and joined the UDM party together with Siaya Governor aspirant Nicholas Gumbo.

The former police spokesperson, who had expressed interest in the governor seat, will now deputise Gumbo in the Governor race to succeed Governor Cornell Rasanga who is retiring on August 9.

Gumbo was initially associated with Ugenya MP David Ochieng's MDG while Owino had even paid for the ODM nominations fee.

Owino said the move seeks to ensure that ODM leader Raila Odinga's supporters turn out in large in the August 9, polls to vote for him.

"The main reason why we have come together is that we have noticed we are going to have serious voter apathy, our supporters have been complaining they were not going to vote without us on the ballot," he said.

He added: "I request that everyone who was to vie, please vie and let's harness our votes".

The two were received by Mandera Governor Ali Roba at United Democratic Movement (UDM) headquarters in Nairobi.
