There is no need to allocate political parties such amounts of money, especially in the election year.
While allocations may be technically legal, these don't meet the moral and ethical threshold.
It does not make sense for only two parties to benefit from the allocation.
Today, as we speak, Jubilee Party is now in the league of Narc Kenya, Narc, Muungano and other small parties.
Therefore, when the country is suffering a debt crisis and skyrocketing prices, we should not be discussing allocating billions to political parties.
We should allocate money to help our people who are starving because of drought and famine and those still suffering the effects of Covid-19.
It is very unfortunate because a party like Jubilee that stands to benefit from this allocation does not have the numbers.
In fact, if this supplementary budget proceeds, because I can see the National Assembly stalling it, then we will definitely move to court.
They will need to tell us who are these members of Jubilee who will get such an amount of money.
As I speak today, I am a member of UDA as are a number of colleagues; we used to be in Jubilee.
So, Jubilee does not deserve those monies?
And if they get it, they must share it with us.
We need to apply the recently enacted Political Parties (Amendment) Act, 2021 so it is shared.
They want to use these monies for Azimio campaigns. That is what is at play, just as they had allocated similar amounts to State House.
They are trying to circumvent the law so they benefit as Azimio.
It is very interesting that 3.5 million Kenyans are starving, insecurity is high and the cost of living is soaring, and yet we have the audacity to allocate Sh1 billion to political parties — that are dead already.
That money, I can assure you, will not be used for the growth of political parties. It will be used for campaigns.
In future, the law should be applied properly, especially on sharing of the Political Parties Fund.
The fund's aim is to ensure protection, growth and independence of the parties from ownership by individuals. They should be institutions of governance.
