The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is targeting to get more women elected into leadership positions in the coming polls.

ODM Women’s League Chairperson, Beth Siengo, said that the Women’s League set out to put targets for women in different positions three years ago.

“We have set a target of 10 women Governors to be elected in 2022, we look at having 20 women Members of Parliament elected, 10 women senators, and an average of five women Members of County Assembly per county,” she said in a press briefing on Thursday.

This, she said, is meant to ensure that the number of women in leadership increases.

“We really need more women in leadership because when women are in leadership, we are sure of peace in our country, when more women are in leadership, we are sure of real development,” she said.

Siengo was speaking at the launch of the Women's Political Leadership Strategy by ActionAid and various other women's rights groups and supporters on Wednesday.

She said that the party has put in place strategies to make sure this target is met, including supporting women who are limited with resources.

“ODM as a party is committed to making sure that more women are elected,” she reiterated.

Siengo said that they will be giving women aspirants direct nomination tickets where they can be able to fight it out with their fellow contenders.
