Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Boss Shollei has questioned the integrity of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
In an interview on KTN News on Monday, Shollei claimed that NCIC had failed in its job and accused the commission of applying double standards while dealing with politicians from different political divides.
The lawmaker pointed out the two cases of Meru Senator Mithika Linturi and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga.
“They dramatically picked Linturi from Eldoret the following day, drove him to Nakuru then to Nairobi where they locked him up. But in the case of Raila, he was summoned but still given the luxury of appearing whenever he felt like. Raila was allowed to continue with his foreign tours and then appear to the NCIC later,” Shollei said.
The Mp also claimed that the NCIC was playing politics and not undertaking its work as an independent commission.
“That is double standards; in fact, they were not going to summon Raila, were it not for the complaints by Kenyans on social media,” the MP said.
Shollei said that someone should set up a tribunal to investigate the NCIC.
The commission has been summoning politicians over hate speech in the recent past.
The commission summoned Raila over the 'madoadoa' remarks that he made at a rally in Wajir.
In a statement, NCIC said the term madoadoa is considered hate speech in Kenya.
The ODM leader, however, apologised for the remarks.
In January, Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, whose case was dropped, had used the term at a rally in Eldoret.
He was arrested by detectives at Eka Hotel in Eldoret on January 9, over the alleged utterances.
However, he was released after the prosecution failed to prefer charges against him within the allocated time.
And on Friday, NCIC singled out 36 Azimio la Umoja Movement and Kenya Kwanza bloggers for perpetuating hate speech on social media.
Kobia said that the commission had noticed that there is an increase in inflammatory attacks, ethnic contempt and hate speech by politicians.
“We want to urge the communities living in the areas of Kisumu, Kericho, Nandi, Kisumu and Kuria east borders to maintain the peace they have enjoyed in the past, and not to allow criminals used by certain individuals to cause ethnic divisions," NCIC Vice-Chair Wambui Nyutu said.
Kobia urged the security team to be all eyes and deal with criminals and individuals behind the inter-cultural conflicts occasioned by incitement.
