For many years, people have enjoyed Netflix streaming from shared passwords with friends and family.

However, this era of sharing passwords could soon come to an end as the company has announced a crackdown on the widespread practice of password sharing between people who don’t live in the same house hold.

The users will be prompted to pay an extra free for the privilege.

In a blog post published by Netflix, the company will be testing the two new features in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.

Add an Extra Member: Members on the Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with - each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password - at a lower price: 2,380 CLP(Sh341.76) in Chile, in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN (Sh242.23) in Peru.

Transfer Profile to a New Account: Members on the Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can enable people who share their account to transfer profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account - keeping the viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations.

This move has come as Netflix has recognized that password sharing has impacted its revenues greatly.

Netflix says it will wait to see how the test run goes in the three countries; whether this change would raise revenue and/or its subscriber count, before making any changes to other markets.
