Governor Jackson Mandago poses with a child after he commissioned the Chemarer Milk cooling plant in Uasin Gishu on March 10, 2022.

Governor Jackson Mandago has commissioned more than legacy 20 projects in Uasin Gishu within the last one month.

The projects include water, healthcare, cooperatives, infrastructure, ECD and agriculture.

This is part of his massive campaign blitz to secure the senator seat.

Mandago is however facing a tough battle from two rivals who are also seeking the UDA ticket.

Lawyer Kipchumba Karoli and former KASS FM presenter Robert Kemei have put up intensive campaigns aimed at defeating Mandago.

“The work we have done is evident and residents of Uasin Gishu are enjoying the fruits of devolution. That is why I want to be elected senator so that I go and participate in strengthening devolution," Mandago said when he commissioned a water project in Moiben subcounty on Saturday.

“I know the challenges of devolution which include the issue of scarce resources and delayed disbursement of funds to the counties."

A section of leaders in the region, led by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, have questioned why Mandago wants to vie for the seat just immediately after serving as governor.

Sudi suggested that Mandago should concentrate on campaigning for Deputy President William Ruto and let other people contest the seat.

“In fact Mandago should look for a national position and let other people complete for county seats,” Sudi said sparking off a debate in the region.

But Mandago said no one can stop him from exercising his democratic right.

“I have the right to vie and I will be humbly requesting the people of Uasin Gishu to give another chance to serve them," he said.

Mandago said his scorecard in Uasin Gishu is evidence of success in his performance.

According to the governor, more than 80 per cent of the projects he initiated have been completed and the remaining few will be done before the elections.

Current Uasin Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar has not said if she will seek re-election.

Mandago said all the projects he initiated will be completed even as he thanked the residents of Kapseret for their continued support.

Some of his legacy projects, including the Sh1.2 billon Ziwa Level 5 Hospital, are still in progress. He said much of the work will be done before August.

The race to succeed him as governor has attracted more than eight aspirants. They include businessman Zedekiah Bundotich Kiprop (Buzeki) who will be vying as an independent candidate.

Those seeking the UDA nomination include outgoing envoys Julius Bitok who was serving in Pakistan and Sarah Serem who was serving in China. Others are Jonathan Bii, Ngenyilel MCA David Singo’ei and Soy MP Caleb Kositany.
