One person has died and several others feared dead after two fuel tankers collided and burst into a ball of flames at Mukhonje market along the Webuye-Eldoret Highway.
The dead person was a boda boda rider who was fell on by one of the trucks that were burnt beyond recognition.
An eye witness Fridah Wanyama said the driver of a truck ferrying diesel fuel lost control.
As a result, his truck rolled down a slope and hit another truck ferrying petrol from behind before colliding a lorry that was transporting building stones and bursting in flames.
She said that one of the trailers fell on a boda boda rider moments before the three vehicles exploded on Saturday evening.
She said that the fire also burnt one shop.
It remained unclear how many people died or were injured. Mukhonje is a known black spot.
Police could not immediately give details of the numbers of those dead or injured saying they were overwhelmed by the fire.
"We are afraid that the fire could spread to nearby shops and homes and cause more damage,” said Matete sub-county police commander Joshua Nyasimi.
The National Police Service in a statement said the fate of the drivers, and conductors of the trucks, if any, is not yet established.
Firefighters from Uasin Gishu and Kakamega counties are at the scene but the fire is still raging.
