Embu Meteorological department will set up a hydrological weather station in Runyenjes and Mbeere North border.

County Met department senior officer James Gathura said the decision came after they realised the area was strategically positioned.

Gathura spoke during a public participation at Riandu on Wednesday.

The station will boost the accuracy of weather forecasting and help the department pass valid advice to residents, who are mainly farmers.

Runyenjes which represents upper part of Embu, experiences more rain due to its proximity to Mt Kenya while Mbeere North receives low rainfall annually.

The hydrology weather station will also help guide residents on the best irrigation systems, floods and drought prediction.

The station will be set up at Riandu in Nthawa ward.

Gathura also said the station would reduce the distance they cover from other stations thus enhancing the collection of accurate data.

“We have realised there was no hydrological weather station and the nearest is stationed at Siakago, which is five kilometres away," Gathura said.

“We have been depending on other stations to identify the weather cycle and that is why we decided to set up this station."

Peter Murithi, a resident, said the project will improve their farming because they have been facing challenges due to lack of knowledge.

“We have been facing the weather challenge but I am happy that the Met department will be close to us to give advice on what to plant depending on their forecast,” he said.
