Police arrest one suspect behind attack on matatu in Mandera

One suspect who was allegedly involved in the attack on a matatu in Mandera has been arrested.

Outgoing North Eastern police boss Bunei Rono said locals arrested the suspect as they escaped from the scene and surrendered him to police on Monday.

The suspect told police they were six at the time of the attack and that they also used guns in their mission.

Bunei confirmed they were interrogating a suspect over the attack.

“We have a suspect in connection with the attack who was nabbed with the help of locals. We are pursuing more,” he said.

At least 10 passengers were on Monday morning killed and many others wounded when their matatu ran over a bomb set on the road along the Arabia-Mandera Highway.

The matatu was ferrying an unknown number of passengers to Mandera Town when it ran over an Improvised Explosive Device.

Police said at least eight other passengers were seriously injured in the incident.

North Eastern new regional commander George Seda said the incident happened about eight kilometres from Mandera Town.
