Police have denied links to the disappearance of a final-year university student in Kayole, Nairobi.

Johnson Waiti, 24, went missing on the eve of New year.

He had stepped out of his parent’s house.

On the day he disappeared, there was a reported shooting incident at the nearby shopping centre, the same time he was out of the house.

Waiti has never been seen again.

People believed to be police officers using a private car are alleged to have been involved in the shooting.

They collected spent cartridges and a body before leaving the scene.

Waiti is a business management student at the University of Nairobi.

Kennedy Avomba, Waiti’s father said on the date their firstborn son went missing, he was still in upcountry with his wife and second-born son.

Avomba said he suspects the police were involved because he has not been shown the victim of the alleged shooting yet, they have not refuted the incident.

He spoke to the Star last week.

However, Kayole OCPD Paul Wambugu said the police are treating Waiti’s case as a matter of a missing person.

He said the parents have recorded a statement.

“I’m aware Njiru DCI is investigating the matter to get to the bottom of it. It is a matter of missing person and we are dealing with it,” he said.

“I’m sure the detectives have covered considerable grounds in the investigations and we want to know the truth.”

Wambugu spoke to the Star on Monday.

The family says it has become a routine visit to the police station and the city's major mortuaries and hospitals, as they look for their son.

When the Star made a follow-up call on Monday, the family was still camping at the Kayole police station, to find out if there were any updates.

“The police had suggested that they have some leads so far. We have heard nothing from them since last week. I hope they have some leads today,” Avomba said.

He said they have reported the matter to the Independent Police Oversight Authority who have vowed to probe the matter.

The family is worried their son could turn into statistics of victims of enforced disappearance or extrajudicial killings that have been on a steady surge in the country.

“We have looked for him. If the police do not tell us anything, I think my next stop will be Yala to see if his body is there,” Avomba said, alluding to River Yala where bodies of people suspected to have been killed by police have been found dumped.
