Four people died after a matatu hit a stationary trailer on the Webuye-Malaba highway.

Bungoma South police commander Benjamin Kimwele said eight others were injured during the Sunday 11pm accident at Makotelo near Mabanga market. The matatu belongs to Bungoma line bus company.

“I received calls and messages at night informing me that there was a fatal accident in Mabanga on the Webuye-Malaba highway. We are saddened about the rising number of accidents that are occurring on this road,” Kimwele said.

The police boss said the injured are receiving treatment at Bungoma County Referral Hospital.

Road accidents have been on the rise on the Webuye-Malaba road due a traffic snarl-up caused by the long queues of trucks following a Covid-19 clearance crisis at the border.

Kimwele cautioned public service vehicles and road users to be careful while using the road, adding that the queues will end soon.

He urged truck drivers to park their trucks properly to avoid frequent accidents.
