Schoolgirl, 14, drowns to death weeks to her KCPE

A 14-year-old KCPE candidate at Waita Primary School in Mwingi central, Kitui county has this evening drowned at the Waita water-rock catchment dam.

An uncle of the deceased, Caxton Mutambuki said tragedy struck at around 5 pm when the girl was playing at the edge of the dam.

It is while playing that she slipped and fell into the waters and drowned.

He said the girl had gone to fetch water with a friend after arriving home from school only to end up losing her life.

Mutambuki said local divers were not around to help save her life. They arrived too late.

He said the divers helped to retrieve the body of the schoolgirl.

Police arrived at the scene accompanied by relatives of the deceased and took the body to Mwingi level 4 hospital.

He called on the government to move with speed and forestall further deaths by erecting a perimeter fence around the dam.

He said in the recent past, at least 6 people drowned at the dam.
