A man was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound following a robbery incident in Homabay Town on Tuesday afternoon.

Kennedy Obonyo, 35, was shot in the left thigh before being robbed of Sh3.5 million he was taking to a local bank.

Obonyo, who is an employee at a local beverage depot, was riding on a motorcycle at about 4.30 pm when a salon car with four occupants onboard that seemed to be trailing his movements struck.

He told police he was moving the money from the local beverage store to the bank when the incident happened.

Obonyo said the attackers were armed with an AK47 rifle and they appeared confident during the attack.

The attack took place outside a local supermarket with Obonyo being shot in the leg. He fell to the ground as the attackers grabbed the cash and drove off.

Obonyo was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted in stable condition, police said.

A spent cartridge of 7.62 special was recovered from the scene by police.

The cartridge will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish ownership.

Other officials handling the case said they suspect the attackers could be rogue police officers.

“It is rare to find such a rifle out there with common thugs. It could be the work of rogue officers but we are pursuing them,” said a senior officer aware of the probe.

A hunt on the gunmen was launched in the town in vain. Police handling the case said they are also investigating to establish if it was an inside job that exposed the victim.

Cases of police being involved in criminal activities have been on the rise recently.

Police authorities, however, term them isolated and that they are being handled properly using various channels.

Police spokesman Bruno Shioso said the matter will receive needed attention adding it was too early to conclude the attackers were police officers.

"It could be anyone. Let us wait for the probe to establish who it was," he said.
