When it comes to politics and search for votes, especially for the country's top job, there's little a candidate won't do to ensure good optics.

And that is how Deputy President William Ruto found himself taking a rare ride in an rickety Toyota Celica that was once used during a Safari rally in Nyahururu.

In a video shared on social media on Tuesday, Ruto was seen hesitantly entering the car branded ‘the hustler ride’.

The status of the Safari rally was much higher in the 70s, since it truly was a rally that could be won using a durable car that would need little servicing.

However, the car ferrying Ruto had rusted and even the sound of the engine could tell its age.

“Hii gari ilikuwa inakimbia Safari rally; it's a 160J,” the driver was heard telling Ruto, after saying hi to him.

Ruto was then ushered into the old Celica  branded 'tanga tanga' and 'hustlers' after a few seconds of hesitation.

When inside the car, the man started heaping praise on the deputy president.

“Niliamua nikutetee juu mimi hula naona wewe ni kama ndungu yangu. Ndio maana nikabandika gari yangu kama hustler (I decided to defend you because you are like my brother; that's why I put the hustler writings on my car as a hustler),” he said as he drove his old car around.

Ruto listened keenly.

“I am happy because God has brought us together and I pray for you. My prayers were not enough; that is why I branded my car,” the man said.

An amused Ruto said, “Sawa boss ..haiya..haiya simamisha hapo (Alright, now top the vehicle).”

The man kept saying he will vote for Ruto even as the deputy president struggled to open the door.

The man helped him open the door before the DP left.

“Nitakupatia kitu kidogo utengeneze nayo hili gari (I'll give you some cash to repair this car),” Ruto said.
