Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has cautioned presidential aspirants not to invest too much in the Mt Kenya region because they might regret later.

In a statement on Monday, the governor said the region will decide who to vote for in 2022 based on real issues and not the number of harambees, roadside shows or tokens to individuals.

"All we ask is caution while pursuing this bloc. Do not invest too much because you are likely to regret. From the last five elections since multipartysm, the region has voted with its head not heart," Kinyanjui wrote on Facebook.

"Interests and only interests will reign supreme."

He noted that some of the things people from the mountain will be looking at include; if one supported them when they wanted one man one shilling one vote and when they sought equality of the vote, as well as if one supported their kin while in office.

The Nakuru governor said that they will also look at an individual's stand on free enterprise and the fight against corruption.

"The candidate that affirms the above takes the prize," he said.

He also warned that history has a way of repeating itself.

Kinyanjui is one of the Mt Kenya governors who have supported the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, and also in favour of a Raila presidency.

Other governors include; Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua), James Nyoro (Kiambu) and Nderitu Muriithi (Laikipia).

His support for the former Prime Minister's bid for the country's top seat has seen him drum up support for Raila, including hosting him in Nakuru county for rallies.

Kinyanjui has also emerged top among favourites Raila could pick for a running mate, from the Mt Kenya region.

Both Raila and Ruto have heavily invested in the mountain, with the DP visiting the region at least once weekly.

The ODM leader has also been making inroads in the region that has always voted against him. He is being fronted by leaders allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
