Kamiti terrorists flown to Nairobi, back to their cells

The three terrorists who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison are back in jail.

They escaped on Monday November 15.

Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga a.k.a Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo a.k.a Yusuf were headed for Somalia when they were recaptured on Thursday in a village in Kitui.

They are expected to get extra charges of escaping from lawful custody.

They were airlifted back to Kamiti where a team of security officials led by interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi and his ICT counterpart waited to receive them.

Police said they were fleeing towards Boni Forest which borders Somalia when they were cornered by security agents, hours after residents reported seeing them in Malalani market in Endau location, some 100 kilometres East of Kitui town.

They were briefly held at Mwingi Police Station before being airlifted to Nairobi.

The terror convicts were whisked away from the station to the Anti-Terror Police Training College in Kanyonyoo, Kitui, by road under heavy security and later flown to Nairobi aboard the police chopper.

Witnesses said the convicts were hiding during the day and trekked under the cover of darkness to avoid being caught.

Residents said they got suspicious when the trio asked for directions connecting to Garissa and Boni Forest in Lamu.

One of the escapees had swollen legs and was limping, a local said.

DCI placed Sh60 million bounty on their recapture.

It is not clear if someone will get the bounty for the arrest of the three.

The escape led to the arrest of 13 wardens and major changes in the Kenya Prisons.

It is not clear if someone got the bounty. Matiang’i refused to discuss the issue. “No comment on that. We are happy they are back here,” he said.
