President Uhuru Kenyatta has led Kenyans in wishing the former third President, Mwai Kibaki a happy birthday as he turned 90.
“Your Excellency, we wish you God's continued providence as you celebrate your 90th birthday today Mr President. Happy and blessed birthday Hon. Mwai Kibaki, the 3rd President of the Republic of Kenya,” State House Kenya tweeted.
As Kenya’s third president, Kibaki is remembered not only for growing Kenya's economy and his commitment to expanding the country's infrastructure during his tenure.
According to his son Jimmy, Kibaki spent his birthday at his Muthaiga home with his immediate family.
"His grandchildren who are in the country were going to see him after school, and other members were going to Muthaiga after work," he told the Star.
Family, leaders and Kenyans took to social media to wish the retired president good health as well as appreciate him.
“Hearty congratulations and warm wishes to you Your Excellency Dr. (h.c.) Mwai Kibaki upon this your 90th Birthday. Your alma mater takes great pride in all your achievements for country, region and continent, and wishes you good health,” Makerere University where Kibaki was an alumnus said in a statement.
"One of BEST we've had as a nation to date. Happy 90th birthday H.E Hon. Mwai Kibaki, the 3rd President of the Republic of Kenya. We love you!" Deputy President William Ruto said.

Other Kenyans said they miss Kibaki's tenure as he proved to be a statesman who sacrificed a lot for the betterment of this nation.
"We also miss his humorous statements and witty remarks like ‘kumbaf!’ ‘mtu bure kabisa!’, which made my childhood growing up, " Kiarie Kathure a matatu operator told the Star.
