Police in Kisumu are probing a Monday night fire at Bishop Okoth Ojolla Girls Secondary School.

School principal Cheti Mariciana said the 6.30pm fire partly destroyed a dormitory that accommodates 84 Form 1 students.

The fire started when students were attending evening preps.

Students lost personal belongings whose value is yet to be determined.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established.

Kisumu county police commander Kipkirui Ngeno said they have launched investigations into the incident.

“We want to establish the cause of the fire. If there is anyone found responsible, then action will be taken,” Ngeno said.

He said a few students who inhaled smoke were treated at a nearby hospital and discharged.

Kisumu county director of education Isaac Atebe said learning is going on smoothly.

He said the fire scene has been handed over to the DCI team for necessary action.

"My team is also in the school and we are waiting for their report," he said.

He said the 84 affected girls are being accommodated in other dormitories.

A team of investigators from the Ministry of Education was also at the school to probe the incident.

A teacher, who asked not to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, said students have panicked because of the exams, which are set to start soon.

When the Star visited the school on Tuesday, students and their parents were being counselled.

The school management has called for support from Kisumu West CDF office and well-wishers to help the affected girls.

The incident occurred barely a few hours after Maranda High School was closed indefinitely following Sunday night's fire that gutted down a dormitory.

The decision to close down the school was reached after a board meeting held on Monday.

The board arrived at the decision to give the school management time to reconstruct the 200-bed capacity dormitory that was destroyed by the fire.

Siaya county director of education Nelson Sifuna said six students have been arrested. They were taken to Bondo police station for questioning.

Bondo subcounty police commander Roseline Mnyolmo said school principal Edwin Namachanja reported the incident.

"The principal made a phone call to inform the police that one of the dormitories identified as Ogango A, which accommodates 200 students, was on fire," she said.

Mnyolmo said general duty officers and a team of DCI detectives from Bondo police station rushed to the scene and, with the help of firefighters from Siaya government, the fire was contained.
