A total of 32 counties have confirmed participation in this year’s Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association Games scheduled for Embu County next month.
Kicosca secretary general Muraya Kabiri said the games will be held between November 14 and 21 at various venues in Embu. The games were not held last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“So far, 32 counties have paid their subscription. However, we expect more to pay up,” added Kabiri.
Kabiri said also expected to participate will be the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Devolution and LAPFUND. He said the games will be staged at Embu University, Embu Stadium, Embu Showground, Kangaru grounds, Embu Social Hall and various hotels within Embu town.
“The games will not be staged in schools because we don’t want to interfere with learning. Golf will be held at Thika Greens Golf Course because Makuyu Golf Course, which is near Embu is not ready to host tournaments,” he added.
Kabiri said teams will only be allowed to enter players only in the seven-day extravaganza.
“Due to Covid-19 regulations, fans will not be allowed. Even though the curfew has been lifted, the containment measures remain in place. Teams have been asked to enter a minimum number of players in all the games,” he said.
He also prevailed upon the counties to vaccinate their teams against Covid-19 before the games.
“Only fully-vaccinated players and officials will be allowed to take part. One must show proof of vaccination before he or she is allowed to enter venues,” he added.
Defending overall champions Nairobi is expected to continue with their dominance in the games but will face stiff competition from Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kisumu and Kisii.
The games will feature 16 disciplines including football, volleyball, tug of war, netball, athletics, basketball, chess, darts, draught, handball, ajua, scrabble and cultural dances.
