A policewoman is recovering in hospital after she was attacked and stabbed in Ngomongo, Kasarani, Nairobi.

Corporal Janet Chepkorir, who is attached to KICC police station in the city, was walking to her residence Monday night after work when she was attacked by a gang that wanted money and valuables from her.

In the ensuing struggle, they stabbed her in the back before making away with her bag with an unknown amount of money, her uniforms, identification documents and other valuables.

The gang escaped leaving her at the scene. Other pedestrians found her at the scene and took her to a local clinic before she was moved to Nairobi West for further treatment.

She is said to be in stable condition.

Kasarani police boss Peter Mwazo said no arrest had been made but efforts to trace the attackers are ongoing.

Police and witnesses said the officer was in civilian clothes at the time of the attack and was targeted for robbery.

Meanwhile, a suspected thug was on Tuesday morning shot dead in a botched robbery in Ngara, Nairobi.

The suspect was in the company of two others and were riding on a motorcycle while attacking and robbing people walking to the market in the area when police were alerted.

Starehe police boss Julius Kiragu said the chase for the suspects started near St Theresa’s area in Mathare to Ngara, almost three kilometers away.

A pistol with three bullets was recovered from the suspects while two others managed to escape.

Residents said morning attacks from gangs are common in the area and the slain suspect was a known leader of the gang.

Police said they have mobilised more personnel to respond to the claims. The body was moved to the mortuary.

Elsewhere, several people were left homeless in two separate fire incidents reported in Nairobi Monday night.

The first incident happened in Kibera slums where up to 40 structures were flattened.

The second incident was reported in Mukuru slums where a similar number of structures were affected. This rendered many homeless.

Those affected have asked for help to reconstruct the structures. The incidents are common in the informal settlements and officials blame it on illegal power connections.

There has been a campaign to address the menace.
