ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has said that he is not interested in contesting for the Nyeri Governor’s seat in the 2022 general elections.
Mucheru was reacting to reports that he and his Health counterpart Mutahi Kagwe were eyeing the positions.
“I think before I proceed, let me, first of all, clarify the issue of interest. You know maybe you are referring to what the media has been saying about myself and your namesake Mutahi Kagwe and the issue that we are interested in the governorship of this great county of Nyeri,” he said.
“Let me assure you that we shall continue to work together and those interests are not there.”
Mucheru said their interests were purely to bring development to Nyeri.
The CS said in their first meeting with Governor Mutahi Kahiga he expressed concern that Safaricom and other operators were having a challenge putting fibre in the county which was attributed to lack of goodwill by the then county government.
During the meeting, Mucheru said they agreed that they would ensure development was taking place adding that a lot has been going on in the county since then.
“And so be rest assured that our interests are very aligned and we will continue to work together in that way because that is what we want,” he said.
“There are many questions being asked about our views but for things that are above our pay grade, we don’t necessarily comment. We only comment on those that are directly related to us.”
The CS made the remarks after governor Kahiga said on Friday that Mucheru was nursing some other interests beyond being a CS.
“It also reminds us that CS Mucheru has interests in Nyeri beyond being CS,” Kahiga said.
They were speaking at Wambugu ATC in Nyeri town when Mucheru officiated the launch of the Communication Authority of Kenya’s Radio Spectrum Monitoring Station aimed at enhancing efficiency in the management of frequency spectrum resources in the country.
Mucheru who preferred to steer clear of politics in his speeches has of late launched scathing attacks on Deputy President William Ruto and his hustler narrative.
The CS claims the DP is misleading the youth with the narrative and that he will not sit and watch the youth being misled going forward.
