The United States has issued a travel advisory against Kenya over Covid-19 and terrorism.

In a notice on Wednesday, the US said its citizens should reconsider travel to Kenya due to Covid-19.

“Exercise increased caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism, health issues, and kidnappings. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory read.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to Covid-19. This indicates a high level of Covid-19 in the country.

In June, the CDC  issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to Covid-19, indicating a moderate level of Covid-19 in the country.

But on Wednesday, CDC said one risks contracting the disease when they visit Kenya.

“You risk of contracting Covid-19 and developing severe symptoms… before planning any international travel, please review the CDC’s specific recommendations for vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers," the advisory read.

In the advisory, the citizens have been asked not to travel to the Kenya-Somalia border and some coastal areas due to terrorism and areas of Turkana County due to crime.

"They should also reconsider travelling to Nairobi neighbourhoods of Eastleigh and Kibera at all times due to crime and kidnapping," it read

“Be especially careful when travelling after dark anywhere in Kenya due to crime. Violent crime, such as armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion, and kidnapping, can occur at any time."

The US says the local police are willing but often lack the capability to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents and terrorist attacks.

In April, the US retained the highest travel advisory on Kenya following what was said was the steep rise in Covid-19 cases in the country, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The move was a major blow to the tourism sector, considering that the US is the leading international tourist market source for Kenya.
