A woman walked into Waithaka police station in Nairobi on Sunday night and declared she had strangled her two sons to death with her bare hands.

Diana Nasimiyu Kibisu seemed shocked and dazed. She told  the police she had been possessed by "dark spirits".

Dagoretti DCIO Francis Wahome quoted her as saying she almost killed her third son.

“She said when she tried to grab the third child, aged five months, he screamed which made her realise she had messed up,” the police boss said.

He added the woman regretted her actions and couldn't explain why it happened.

The woman was arrested after she led police to her house to confirm the killing of her sons aged four and two years.

Police said they found the bodies of Sydney Miheso, four, Miracle Miheso, two, on the sofa in the sitting room on Sunday July 25.

Wahome said they will take her for a psychiatric assessment before she is charged.

Apart from "dark spirits", police said they don't know the motive.

“She can't explain what happened and why. Neighbours said the woman and her husband had domestic issues, which her husband confirmed,"  he said.

She had apparently argued that night with her husband and efforts were being made to reconcile them.

Neighbours said her mother-in-law had travelled from Lugari to Nairobi to help her and husband Alex Miheso sort out their domestic differences.

Their session didn't go well and new disagreements arose.

Diana and Miheso later saw off her mother-in-law, and her husband left.

The suspect went back home and strangled her sons.

Miheso said they had been facing  challenges but he did not expect his wife to kill their children.

“She called in the evening and asked me to come home, that she had killed the children. Shehas always sent me messages threatening to kill the kids,” he said.

Her relatives took the third child away.

Meanwhile, police in Garissa are investigating the death of a man who was found tied up and floating in the Tana River.

The body had a tattoo bearing the name of a woman. His arms were tied with a piece of cloth.

Police say the body also had rocks inserted in his trousers at the waist to make it sink.
