Former Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti, 57, is dead.

The former legislator, who had diabetes, died in Nairobi.

The former Alliance Party of Kenya MP developed diabetes-related complications and was rushed to hospital but succumbed.

Mwiti's son, Mutethia Irea, said he was doing well until Saturday night.

He retired from active politics in 2017 to venture into the corporate world.

He served as an MP from 2013 to 2017.

In 2015, Mwiti faced allegations of raping a woman in Nairobi., which he denied.

Mwiti was charged alongside David Muchiri, a doctor that police accused of aiding and abetting the crime, by conducting an involuntary HIV test on the complainant.

The case was still ongoing and as of April this year, Mwiti had requested that the case be heard in open court, instead of virtually in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mwiti denied three counts of rape, intimidation and assault.

Following Mwiti's death, Tigania West MP John Mutunga condoled with the family.

"Mwiti was a dedicated leader who served his people well," he said.
