Teachers Service Commission will this week start training 90,000 teachers who will handle the Competency-Based Curriculum in Grade 5.
The training will begin on Monday and is set to prepare teachers for its rollout that will take effect as schools reopen for the first term of 2021 on July 26.
The training targets three teachers in every school and will take place at the zonal levels in all the counties.
The teachers will be trained on the different instructional methods to be used in the new curriculum.
They will also be taken through the curriculum designs as well as the CBC continuous assessment strategies.
The latter seeks to train teachers on how to conduct internal assessments which will contribute to the learners' final mark as they exit the primary school.
Teachers will be responsible for awarding the internal scores.
Under CBC, the equivalent of KCPE examinations will only account for only 40 per cent of the final mark.
The remaining 60 per cent will be gathered from the continuous assessments which will be conducted in Grade 4, 5, and 6.
However, the assessments will be administered by KNEC.
The curriculum seeks to measure the achievements of the learners.
In June, TSC announced that it had set aside Sh1 billion to train teachers on the CBC for the 2021/22 financial year.
So far, TSC chief executive, Nancy Macharia says 156,000 teachers in primary schools have been trained.
