CALEB KOSITANY: Kiambaa vote the death knell of tribal kings

Kenyans are no longer looking at the tribal leader

In Summary
  • It is a wakeup call to tribal leaders that the current generation and the politics of Kenya has now moved from tribalism and is now issue based.
  • There is going to be a mass exodus from Jubilee – whether to UDA or to other parties I don’t know.

What we can deduce from the just-concluded Kiambaa by-election is that Kenyans have outgrown their ethnic enclaves; they no longer need tribal leaders for direction.

They are interested in a national leader who will unite the country and think of the problems that affect them. It is now going to be issue-based elections.

Whoever will be aspiring for whatever position will be gauged based on the team she or he is in. Is it a team of empty rhetoric or of people who can deliver something?

It is a wake-up call for the so-called tribal leaders that the current generation and the politics of Kenya have moved from tribalism and are instead focussing on issues.

The by-election also proved that Jubilee Party died long ago. It is actually a finished party and is not going to be a factor in next year's general election.

There is going to be a mass exodus from Jubilee in the coming months – whether to UDA or to other parties, I don’t know.

Nobody ever wants to be associated with a sinking ship. When a ship is sinking, you have to jump out; whether you know how to swim or not, you have to jump out.

There is a lot to tell about the Juja and Kiambaa parliamentary by-elections. The people have respected President Uhuru Kenyatta but are now done with him as he is exiting.

He has not come out clear on what he exactly wants in this game because when you see a president who is about to finish his term getting involved in politics of the day, it is confusing.

People really don’t know what President Uhuru wants. It is good if he came clear and said this is the person he wants even if it is the merger with ODM so that his presidential candidate is Raila Odinga.

Those are the things people are waiting for Uhuru to say and that will determine what happens.

I think Uhuru will remain active in politics. He is not retiring fully and should just name his preferred candidate and campaign for him, that's not an issue.
