A lawmaker has petitioned the National Assembly for the reopening of Mama Ngina Waterfront and Jomo Kenyatta public beach in Mombasa.
Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir said traders who were operating in the said areas have suffered immense losses.
The waterfront and the public beach were closed in adherence with restrictions to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Nassir wants the National Assembly Trade committee chaired by Ali Haji Adan to engage the Executive and the county government on how the public spaces can be reopened.
"The traders are willing to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines. Some of them have been in business for over 40 years hence have challenges switching to other ventures," Nassir said on Tuesday.
He accused the authorities of favouring bigger businesses which have since been allowed to operate.
"Efforts to address this matter with the concerned authorities have been futile," the lawmaker said.
The waterfront and public beach have traders dealing with items like shoes, jewellery, clothing, and foodstuffs.
