Police in Nairobi have successfully stopped university student leaders demonstrations in Nairobi.

The student leaders drawn from various universities held the demonstrations over rise of crime in learning institutions across the country.

According to the police, the student leaders led by Jeniffer Mbogo, the Multi Media University student's President did not have clearance to hold the demonstration.

They demanded an end to gender-based violence and more security for female students who have been falling victims.

The students donned T-shirts branded #EndRapeCulture. 

Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino also intervened during the demonstration.

The Universities Presidents Council of Kenya on Monday wrote to the Nairobi Police Commander informing him of the planned demonstrations which would be held today.

In the letter, the demonstrations would begin from Uhuru park, freedom Corner through Harambee House and end outside Parliament Buildings.

The Universities Presidents Council of Kenya requested the police commander to provide security for all participants of the demonstrations.

The latest case of insecurity in universities saw Masinde Muliro University students take to the streets about a week ago, to protest the death of their fellow student who was raped and murdered in Kakamega Town.

A semi-naked body of the third year student was found in a thicket after she went missing from Kefinco Estate on Tuesday evening.
