Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Thursday condemned violence witnessed in Githurai on Wednesday during a visit by ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Raila had visited the populous neighbourhood in Kiambu to popularise the Building Bridges Initiative report when the chaos begun.
The confrontation lasted almost one hour at Githurai roundabout and saw youths smash the windscreen of Raila’s chase car, a Land Cruiser Prado KCH 822R.
Sakaja on Thursday took a swipe at politicians, asking them to stop inciting the youths in Nairobi. He also advised the youths to shun being misused by politicians.
"We have 43 tribes in Kenya and there is no problem that is prescribed to a Luo or Kalenjin. When there is no money it’s a problem to all of us. When you can’t eat it’s the same. So, we don’t want people to start using young people in Nairobi to cause violence and fighting," Sakaja said.
Sakaja spoke at Gatina Primary School in Kawangware where he witnessed the donation of desks by Tetrapak.
He urged politicians to instead address the real issues in Nairobi including unemployment and providing opportunities for the youths.
“When you look at all these children, all they want is for you to guarantee their future. They don’t care about your tribe. What is important is the content of your brain not the surname behind your first name,” he said.
The senator noted the increase in notoriety among students in schools that has so far seen destruction of property in six schools.
He called on students to focus on their studies and obey their parents.
Sakaja pledged to revive the campaign for school feeding programme. “The school feeding programme is extremely important. There is no way a child can be hungry in class and concentrate. They can’t,” he said.
