The Kenya Red Cross Society has donated personal protective equipment and pharmaceuticals worth Sh11 million to the Kakamega county government.
Speaking while receiving donations at the county headquarters on Thursday, Deputy Governor Philip Kutima said the equipment would boost protection for health workers.
He urged residents to take Covid-19 seriously, citing the recent deaths of prominent personalities from the county. They include orthopaedic surgeon Dr Daniel Alushula, former Nairobi county Health Services executive Dr Robert Ayisi and Kakamega county chief of staff Robert Sumbi.
The measures put in place by the Ministry of Health in the fight against the pandemic include the wearing of masks, washing hands with soap and keeping social distance.
Head of disaster management at Kenya Red Cross Elijah Muli said they have partnered with the European Union and MasterCard to protect healthcare workers in the country against the coronavirus.
