The man was killed after a group of youths invaded several villages in Kikopey to protest against the holding of their livestock.

Trouble started two days ago when a group of pastoralists drove their animals to farms in Kiamolo village, where they injured two women who tried to block them.

Farmers retaliated by driving the animals to Gilgil police station, demanding the arrest of attackers who had invaded their land.

Resident Phylis Njeri said on Wednesday morning that the herders regrouped and raided several homes, killing the man and injuring others.

“We have lost one man to these attackers, and we are asking police to rise to the occasion and arrest all those involved,” she said.

Speaking on the phone, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari said a security meeting called to resolve the impasse ended prematurely after the herders failed to turn up.

She said some of the injured were admitted to Gilgil Subcounty Hospital while others were treated and discharged.

“This is a problem that has lasted for years and it's time people respected private property,” she said.

Gilgil police boss John Onditi confirmed the incident, saying more police officers had been dispatched to the area.

“Our officers are on the ground seeking those responsible for the killing and others are making plans to reopen the highway,” he said.

Earlier in the morning, herders blocked Mai Mahiu-Narok road for three hours after a child drowned in a trench dug around the Dry Port.

Naivasha police boss Samuel Waweru who toured the area, convinced the demonstrators to reopen the road.

“We had an incident where a minor drowned in one of the trenches leading to the closure of the road but this had been resolved,” he said.
