Kenya Wildlife Service on Monday thanked government agencies and partners in helping to extinguish the fire in Tsavo Conservation area.

Fire engulfed Tsavo Conservation Area for the fourth time in a month last Saturday, affecting thousands of hectares at the park.

"By 10.00 pm last night the interagency team had managed to contain the fire. However, strong winds in the area re-ignited it. This morning the team successfully fought the fire at Murka area in Tsavo West National Park," KWS said.

KWS further stated that both aerial and ground teams were mobilised, with graders, water bowsers and fire engines at the site to augment efforts.

"KWS thanks KDF, NYS, County Commissioner of Taita Taveta, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, AWF, local community and Kazi Kwa Vijana for their support," KWS said.

Meanwhile, a standby team will be at the fire site for the next 24 hours to watch out for any further outbreak.

Tsavo, in south-eastern Kenya, is the country's biggest national park and home to hundreds of animals such as lions, elephants and buffaloes.

It is visited by thousands of local and international tourists each year.

The fire came at a time when the Kenyan government is pushing for a revival of the crucial tourism industry which has lost $1bn in revenue due to Covid-19.
