A fuel shortage has hit Bungoma county with motorists and boda boda riders stranded due to lack of the essential commodity.

The shortage has been blamed on the refusal by the big fuel stations to supply and sell to their smaller counterparts.

The shortage has hit major towns of the county including Bungoma, Webuye, Kimilili and Chwele.

The situation has left over 3,000 boda bodas and public service vehicles grounded. Most have suspended their operations.

The big stations said they have refused to release their fuel because the retailers want it sold at a loss-making prices. They asked Energy CS Alfred Keter to intervene.

Most of those in need of the fuel have been camping at one petrol station in Webuye which was still selling.
