Unknown people on Sunday night attempted to burn down the Kakamega county ANC branch office in Amalemba.

Branch chairman Julius Arunga said the arsonists managed to break one of the windows and poured in petrol before lighting the fire.

"Fortunately, only the store was burnt but the rest of the documents and other items are intact. We have learnt of this incident this morning and we don't want to speculate but it is not a coincidence,” Arunga said.

Arunga said the burnt store was holding some materials that were used during party nominations ahead of the 2017 General Election.

"It's unclear what somebody would want in an office like ours with very little assets," he said.

Branch chief executive officer Isaac Otiende said the fire had no effect on the day-to-day running of the party.

The incident was reported at Kakamega central police station on Monday morning and police have commenced investigations.

Only ANC and the Independence party Kanu have offices in Kakamega town. ODM operates from the county government headquarters.

Jubilee operated from former MP Manyala Keya's hotel in the town during the last elections.
