The Vihiga county government has given families one week to collect bodies at the Mbale Referral Hospital or they be disposed of.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the health department said families can pick the bodies anytime up to March 31.

Uncollected bodies will be disposed of upon the expiry of the time given, the notice said.

Earlier in the week, Governor Wilber Ottichillo had issued a statement urging the public to collect their bodies before the mortuary is closed.

The county has waived morgue charges to ensure bodies are collected as soon as possible. “No more bodies will be allowed in our public morgues. When someone dies, let the immediate family burry him or her,” Ottichillo said on Tuesday.
