Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly Beatrice Elachi has welcomed the move by President Uhuru Kenyatta to have the national Government take over key functions of the county government.
Elachi while addressing journalists at her office on Wednesday said the move has breathed life to Nairobi.
“As from January 29,2020, the county assembly had agitated to see the comeback of the Nairobi regeneration and what the President has done, he has safeguarded it,” she said .
She said the move has rescued Nairobi from landing into a much deeper crisis than it is at the moment.
Elachi said the county assembly has a very critical role to play in terms of the creation of a framework through the committee that would be formed by both the county and the national governments.
“ The committee will become the interlink between us and the national government. It is just oversight, “ she said.
Elachi's remarks came following the agreement between the Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and Sonko to transfer a section of county services to the national government.
The deal sealed at the State House on Tuesday witnessed by the President and the Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka means the government will be in charge of County Health services, County Transport services, County Public Works, Utilities and Ancillary services and the County Government Planning and Development.
