Cotu secretary General Francis Atwoli has eulogised the late, retired president Daniel Moi as a great leader who nurtured the current crop of political leaders.

Atwoli, who spoke during the funeral service of the former president on Wednesday at Kabarak, described how his close friendship with Mzee Moi started.

He said Moi tasked him to solicit votes for him during the 1992 general elections which he respectfully agreed to.

 

"When he asked me to look for votes in Butere, I stood and I made mzee gain 25 per cent of the Western votes to enable him to lead this country for another 10 years. From there we became friends," he said.

He spoke of having a special place whenever he would visit Moi in his home.

He recounted how Moi made an impact on Cotu during his long reign as head of state.

Atwoli said Moi always recognised workers and it is during his time that Cotu membership grew immensely.

"Mzee never missed to attend our May day celebrations," he recalled.

"All that we have, tulipata kutoka kwa mzee na tunataka kurudisha mkono," he added.
