Baringo senator Gideon Moi has told Kenyans that the retired president Daniel Moi died peacefully at 5: 20am on Tuesday.

"...we have accepted. But mine is just to give my heartfelt gratitude to Kenyans.. thank you and may God bless you..." he said.

Gideon was speaking at the Lee funeral home accompanied by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and other officials.

 
 

The body of the late has already been taken to the mortuary even as officials thronged the place.

There was heavy police presence in the place as more leaders arrived in Nairobi hospital.

All roads leading to lee funeral and Nairobi hospital have been closed. Moi, who was Kenya's former president died at the age of 95.

He was seen by his critics as an authoritarian ruler who held on to power for 24 years, but his allies credited him for maintaining stability in the East African state.

Moi stepped down in 2002 after being constitutionally barred from running for a further term.

He was the country's second president taking over after the death of Jomo Kenyatta in 1978.
