Police officers banned from preaching in uniforms

Administrative action will be taken against cops who breach the directive.

Police officers have been banned from preaching while in official uniform.

In a memo issued on Wednesday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Njoroge Mbugua said unless, within a police institution like colleges, it is unlawful for any police officer to preach donned in work uniform.

"Officers are encouraged to separate official duties and private engagement and act appropriately," he said.

Njoroge said that police wearing uniforms in worship areas will only be allowed during the discipline services or thanksgiving service.

He asked police commanders to warn officers under their command from breaching the directive otherwise administrative action will be taken against them.

Njoroge further said that even though the National Police Service respects the freedom of worship of all officers, preaching in uniform will not be condoned.
