A businessman who has been on the run for 13 days after allegedly stabbing one man to death and injuring five others has surrendered to the police.

The 34-year-old Joshua Kileru was escorted to Nchiru Police Station in Tigania West at 5am on Saturday by Julius Kang’ote, a former Muthara chief.

His surrender brought a sigh of relief to residents of Muriri market in Tigania East where the attacks happened on September 30, leaving Mutembei Mwongera dead.

The other victims included women cereals and vegetable sellers whom he is said to have run over with his vehicle.

Kileru had been quoted by a local newspaper as telling a chief that he intended to kill 100  people.

Police had been looking for him. They had issued a warrant of arrest against him.

Tigania East DCI boss Benson Omondi said the suspect will be arraigned on Monday (today) for murder and causing grievous harm at Muriri market.

Kileru has two shops at Muriri market.

The social media had reported that he had abandoned his car at Muriri market and started stabbing people randomly with a knife.

Tigania East sub-county police commander Peter Karanja denied that seven people been killed.

“We had only one person dead and five injuries contrary to what we are seeing on social media that seven people were killed. Such information is misleading,” Karanja had said by phone.

Samuel Gitonga had at the time complained that the assailant had run over his camel with a vehicle and demanded compensation.

Gitonga could not understand why the police did not respond promptly yet the deputy county commissioner’s offices, the chief’s office and a police station are a few metres from where the attack happened.

“They could have arrested him,” he said.
