Uhuru to Ethiopian PM: You fully deserves the recognition

Abiy becomes the 24th African to win the Nobel Laureates award.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed deserved international recognition due to his outstanding peace pursuit.

Uhuru on Friday joined other leaders in congratulating the Ethiopian PM after being awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

"I am delighted for my brother Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the People of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Award. Prime Minister Ahmed fully deserves the recognition," Uhuru said.

Uhuru added that, "Prime Minister Ahmed stands out as a relentless champion for peace, stability and prosperity of his country, our region and the entire African continent."

Ethiopian PM was awarded the global award following his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation and particularly leading a decisive initiative to resolve boundary despite with its neighbouring country Eritrea.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that his award was also meant to recognise all stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia, East and Northeast African regions.

Abiy becomes the 24th African to win the award, joining other Nobel Laureates including the 2004 award winner Wangari Maathai.

Other African leaders who have won the prize include the former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (2011), Mohamed ElBaradei of Egypt (2005) and the former UN secretary general, the late Koffi Annan (2001).
