Five people, three of them police officers, were arrested early yesterday with bhang, contraband sugar and relief food in a Wajir CID pick-up.

They were intercepted by a multi-agency police team at Kanyonyoo in Kitui County along the Nairobi-Garissa road.

Two of them were from Wajir DCIO office and one a regular police officer, also from Wajir. They were transporting 245kgs of bhang, 150kgs of contraband sugar, 325kgs of rice and 100 containers of cooking oil.

They also had Sh239,500, money the police suspected was meant to bribe their way at various police roadblocks.

Kitui rural sub-county police commander Charles Chacha said the bhang will be verified at the Government Chemist.

“We have arrested five people whom we are holding for investigation. Some are connected to contraband cigarettes that were also intercepted,” Chacha said.

The five were detained at Kyusyani police station.

A KDF soldier seized in the ambush was handed over to military police.

Chacha did not specify why the soldier was arrested.

The occupants of a Bukhari  Parcel  Service lorry intercepted at Kanyonyoo allegedly with the contraband cigarettes were taken to Kyusyani  police station.
