• Six others seriously injured
Three people died on Tuesday morning when a matatu collided with a canter on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.
Six others were critically injured.
Makindu traffic police base commander James Rasungu said the accident occurred between Simba and Kiboko shopping centres.
He said it was caused by a tyre burst. The matatu driver lost control, hitting an oncoming lorry. Both vehicles rolled in the 7.30am accident.
“The three, one occupant from the canter and two others from the matatu died on the spot when the two vehicles rolled,” Rasungu told the Star.
The canter was ferrying building materials to Nairobi while the matatu was headed to the opposite direction.
Rasungu said six other passengers were taken to Makindu Subcounty Hospital.
